Map Elements are parts that make up the design and layout of a map are visual elements, which allow the transfer of information. The cartographer arranges the visual elements into a functional composition to facilitate communication. [1]

Map elements include: Map Title, Scale (map), Compass rose, Inset Map, Map legend, Borders, Graticule, citation of primary sources for map[2], Labeling (map design), Color, etc.

Cautions

Although many maps include these elements, the presence of these elements may vary from map to map, it all depends on what the map is trying to convey to a specific audience or use. See: Maps, Map, Cartographic Design

Too many map elements can distract and clutter the map, disrupting the Visual hierarchy and consequently cause an inability to understand the maps desired content. [3]
