Portal for ArcGIS is a map-centric content management system in which an organization can utilize the web geographic information system (GIS) portal concept in an infrastructure. Members within an organization can use this ArcGIS for Server extension to:
- Create new web maps for sharing
- Host new web mapping applications
- Connect to online GIS resources, geographic data, and maps
- Carry out queries for GIS content within an organization
- Create groups among colleagues to share GIS information
- Share layer and map packages for use in ArcGIS for Desktop

- Map viewer – Users can carry out visualization and mapping of GIS data using the map viewer to save and design web maps as well as embed maps in applications. The GIS technology extends to a broader user base with user-friendly mapping tools
- Portal for ArcGIS website – Users can review their usage and share data within an organization
- ArcGIS applications – Users can share web maps interactively using the system, which supports user-friendly applications. Portal for ArcGIS supports portal-ready applications including Collector for ArcGIS, Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS, Esri Maps for Office, and so forth [2]
- Administrator tools – Users with administrator roles can configure and customize various Portal for ArcGIS website properties and determine available functionality
- ArcGIS Online content – Users can access all nine ArcGIS Online basemaps: [3] OpenStreetMap, Imagery, Oceans, Imagery with Labels, National Geographic, Streets, Light Gray Canvas, Topographic, and Terrain with Labels

Portal for ArcGIS requires 64-bit operating systems to operate. The system can run on any of the following platforms [4]:
- Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Datacenter
- Windows Server 2012 Standard and Datacenter
- Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter (maximum version supported is SP1)
- Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter (maximum version supported is SP2)
- Windows 8.1 Professional and Enterprise
- Windows 8 Professional and Enterprise
- Windows 7 Ultimate, Enterprise, Professional, Home Premium
Hardware requirements
Portal for ArcGIS requires the following hardware to operate:
- Processor: 4 cores for 100 concurrent users
- Memory/RAM: 4 GB or more
- Disk space: Users need at least 50 GB of disk space, while larger organizations may need more than 50 GB to accommodate more portal users
Supported web browsers
Portal for ArcGIS can run on any of these browsers:
- Firefox 10 or higher
- Google Chrome 10 or higher
- Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11
