Lesson 7: Platform Performance
Selecting the right hardware will improve user performance, reduce overall system cost, and establish a foundation for building effective GIS operations. Selecting the wrong hardware can contribute to implementation failure - spending money on a system that will not support your business needs.

Exercise 7: Use the CPT to evaluate platform performance
Hardware platform performance has doubled every two years while server cost keeps decreasing, making a cost-effective life cycle of server technology about 3–5 years maximum. Virtualization has improved IT flexibility in migrating servers from slower to faster higher-capacity host platform environments, but selecting the correct server remains one of the most critical decisions in maintaining productive operations.
